Q&A
If you do not have MitID, you must send the information we need to process your application along with a receipt for the payment of the required fee by letter. See contact details.
However, you must be aware that the processing time will be considerably longer if you choose to send your application by letter. The reasons are that sending the application by letter increases the risk of errors, that we must spend more time on manually entering your data and that it typically takes up to five days for PostNord to deliver standard letters.
The fee payable for each firearm certificate that you apply for is DKK 1,085 irrespective of whether you are granted a certificate or not.
Your right of cancellation lapses when you have submitted your application, and the fee is non-refundable.
No fee is charged for the registration of a shotgun that you are allowed to possess by virtue of your hunting licence. Nor is any fee charged for applications for certificates for pointed and sharp weapons, ammunition, reloading, barrels, detachable loading devices, breech blocks, sound moderators, optical sights, alarm and signal weapons, combined gas and signal weapons, salute cannons, etc.
The rules on payment appear from section 6b of the Danish Act on Weapons and Explosives (våbenloven), which is available in Danish at retsinfo.dk.
Please note that the fee has subsequently been changed to DKK 1,085, see section 2 of Act No. 124 of 30 January 2021.
In order for us to process your application, we need you to consent to us obtaining information about you in the police records.
We cannot grant certificates, licences, authorisations, etc., if a personal background check of you indicates that giving you access to weapons could be a cause for concern.
You must enter their email address(es), and they will then receive an email with a declaration of consent form that they must sign using MitID.
There are a few exceptions from the requirement for consent from parents or guardian. If a consent is not required, no request will be made for the email address(es) of parents or guardian. For example, an exception is made in the case of a firearms pass.
When you apply for a renewal of your weapon certificate, you should be aware that the processing time for an application for renewal is the same as for an application for a new weapon. The reason is that we make an equally thorough assessment of the police's data on you and of your application under the current legislation which may have changed since you were granted your most recent certificate.
If you are a member of more than one club where you carry or use pointed and sharp weapons, you will need a certificate for each club.
More information is available under import/export of weapons.
The period of validity of certificates for the most common types of weapons is usually:
- Hunting weapons, interchangeable systems, barrels and ammunition for own use: 10 years
- Optical sights: 5 years
- Reloading, black powder and clay pigeon shooting weapons: 5 years
- Collections of firearms, combined gas and signal weapons, detachable loading devices, loaded and discharged cartridges: 5 years
- Collections of pointed and sharp weapons: 10 years
- Pointed and sharp weapons for use: 5 years
- The period of validity appears from your certificate, and it is your responsibility to apply for a renewal in due time before the certificate expires. We will send you a reminder to renew your certificate in due time before it expires.
Expiry of certificates (in danish)
It is a requirement for holding a weapon certificate that you can pass a personal background check of the data stored on you in the police records throughout the lifetime of the certificate. If you commit a crime or display any other disturbing behaviour that in our view constitutes a risk, we can recall your certificate before expiry.
If you are the owner of the weapon and do not respond to the reminder of the expiry of your weapon certificate, you may subsequently be charged with violation of the Act on Weapons and Explosives.
If your co-owner certificate has expired, you can either apply for a renewal or you can let the other co-owner take ownership of the weapon. You should be aware that you may then no longer have access to the weapon.

Expiry of certificates (in danish)
If you no longer want a certificate for your weapon, you can either dispose of your weapon to an arms dealer or to a person who can lawfully possess the weapon. A transfer of the weapon requires a valid certificate. You can also hand in the weapon to the police for the purpose of destruction.
Disposal of weapons (in danish)
This includes certificates for reloading and pointed and sharp weapons as well as authorisation of employees and applies both to private individuals and businesses.
If you do not want to renew your certificate when it expires, you must dispose of your weapon.
