Greenland Police is an independent police district that is led by a police director and is - like the Danish police districts - subject to the Ministry of Justice, the National Commissioner of Police and the Director of Public Prosecutions.
19 police stations
Greenland Police is represented throughout Greenland with 19 police stations spread out in the country's five municipalities. In addition, Greenland Police has a national emergency call centre, which is located in Nuuk. In the majority of the 55 settlements, the police are represented by municipal bailiffs, who carry out tasks of a police nature.
In addition to general police duties that are also performed in Danish police districts, Greenland Police is also responsible for all search and rescue operations on land, incl. on the ice sheet. It is called Search and Rescue (SAR). In addition, Greenland Police and the Joint Arctic Command share responsibility for SAR tasks at sea in internal waters.
Greenlandic police officers are trained at the Police Academy in Greenland, and the internship takes place in Greenland. Training to become a police officer in Greenland is equivalent to training at the Police Academy in Denmark, and therefore police officers can serve in the entire Kingdom of Denmark, if they are graduates from the Police Academy in Greenland.
Danish police officers regularly do assistance service in Greenland Police for shorter or longer periods.
