Q&A

All citizens in Denmark aged 15 and over can obtain MitID. If you do not have one now, you can order one. You can order MitID through your bank or at borger.dk.

If you do not have MitID, you must send the information we need to process your application along with a receipt for the payment of the required fee by letter. See contact details

However, you must be aware that the processing time will be considerably longer if you choose to send your application by letter. The reasons are that sending the application by letter increases the risk of errors, that we must spend more time on manually entering your data in the system and that it typically takes up to five days for PostNord to deliver standard letters.

No fees are charged for applications for weapon passes, import/export licences for weapons and weapon declarations.
Once you have submitted the online form, you will receive a receipt through Digital Post. During peak periods, case processing times may be longer. An overview of cases currently being processed is available under updates our website.

If we need any further information for the purpose of your application, we will contact you. Otherwise, you will receive our decision through Digital Post.

A licence to import/export weapons is relevant if a weapon is to be transferred to another country permanently or for a long period of at least three months.

If a weapon is to be out of the country for more than three months, an export licence is required - if, for example, you move abroad and want to bring your weapon or if you sell a weapon to an international buyer.

Similarly, you must apply for an import licence if you move to Denmark from abroad and bring your weapons or if you buy a weapon abroad. In addition to the import licence, you must also apply for a separate weapon certificate unless the weapon is comprised by a general licence for possession.

The following weapons and weapon components are exempt from an import licence (but are still subject to an export licence):

  • Non-significant weapon components
  • Muzzle loaders dating back before 1870
  • Breach loaders that cannot use cartridges
    Airsoft and paintball guns
  • Airguns calibre 4.5mm or smaller
An import licence covers the significant parts of your weapon. In the case of a rifle, it covers the barrel, receiver and bolt.
Some weapon types are exempt from this rule, see under 'What is an import/export licence?'. In addition to an import licence, you will also need a weapon certificate for the weapon or weapon components.
An export licence covers several parts of your weapon, including the most significant weapon parts and various components, depending on the weapon type. You must always apply for an export licence no matter the weapon type.

Moreover, you are required to produce an import licence to apply for an export licence if your weapon falls within the rules governing import licences, see under 'What is an import/export licence?'. However, an official document stating that the country to which you are exporting the weapon has no objections to the import can be used instead of a specific import licence from the recipient country.
