Transit of weapons, ammunition and explosives through Denmark

Transporting weapons, ammunition and explosives through Denmark normally requires a transit document.

Under Danish law, the transit of weapons, ammunition and explosives through Denmark is considered to be import followed by export.
Good to know
  • Weapons of any kind, including knives, etc.
  • Items which appear to be weapons or which can be converted into weapons by virtue of their material or design
  • Ammunition
  • Military equipment with a few exceptions for transit within the EU/EEA
  • Explosives

If you are to travel through Denmark to another country with alarm and signal weapons, airguns with a caliber greater than 4.5 mm or weapons designed for hunting, fishing or competition shooting and matching components and ammunition or muzzle loaders manufactured before 1870 and/or breech loaders manufactured before 1870 which cannot use fixed ammunition, you must apply for an import/export licence from the Weapons and Permit Department of the Administrative Centre of the Police (Politiets Administrative Center "PAC").

If you want to apply for permission to travel through Denmark with explosives, you must send your application and relevant documents to the Danish National Police (Rigspolitiet) through pol-vaben-ansogning@politi.dk or through Digital Post.

  • Application form
  • Written declaration from the recipient country that the country intends to admit the items

In addition to a correctly completed application form, your application must also contain documentation that the recipient country has granted an import licence or a written declaration from the authorities of the recipient country that an import licence is not required for the relevant item.

The licence granted will be valid for up to three years.

Military equipment, see section 6(1)(iii)-(v), (viii) and (viiii) of the Danish Offensive Weapons Act (våbenloven), which is imported from an EU/EEA country to be immediately exported to another EU/EEA country are exempt from the requirement to obtain permission, see section 6(7) of the Act.

An application for a transit document to accompany explosives for transit within the EU (an intra-Community transfer of explosives document under Directive 2014/28/EU) must be sent by ordinary letter to the following address:

The Danish National Police (Rigspolitiet)

Polititorvet 14
DK-1780 Copenhagen V

Mark the envelope: "Application for transit of explosives".

The EU form must be approved in advance by the authorities of the recipient country.
