Expiry of weapon certificate

Have you been notified by us about the expiry of your certificate?

We recommend that you apply for a new certificate in due time before it expires as the case processing time for private certificates can be up to three months.

Please note that even though you are applying for a renewal of an existing certificate, you must use the application form for a new weapon certificate.

Apply for a new weapon certificate

Remember that even though you already have a certificate, you must enter all information about the weapon.

When you apply for a new certificate, the new certificate will be valid from the date of issue and not from the expiry of your existing certificate.

Remember, you can check the status of the case processing in selected areas (links to danish website).

Questions about expired certificates

Please ignore the letter of notification from us if you have already applied for a new certificate at politi.dk.

On the webpage Frequently asked questions about weapons, you will find answers to frequently asked questions about weapons, including what you should do if your certificate has expired.

Questions about expired certificates
If you have received a letter notifying you that your certificate is about to expire and you have already applied for or been issued with a new certificate, you can ignore the letter.

If the Permit Department (Tilladelser) cannot consider your application in due time before your certificate expires, you will also be notified when your certificate has expired. If you have applied for a new certificate, you can also ignore this letter.
You must cancel the certificate allowing you to carry and use the weapon; the owner does not have to do anything further.

See more about how you cancel your certificate.
You must cancel your own certificate. If there is only one other owner of the weapon, that other owner will automatically become the sole owner of the weapon.

If you do not want to renew your certificate when it expires, you must dispose of your weapon.

You are not allowed to destroy your weapon yourself. If you want to have your weapon destroyed, you can hand it over to the local police.

Contact the police on telephone No. +45 114 and ask them to direct you to your nearest local police station. You must then inform the local police about when you will bring in your weapon. Please cover the weapon to avoid attracting unnecessary attention.

New weapons legislation came into force on 1 July 2020. According to the new legislation, sound moderators for rifles no longer need to be registered separately. If the sound moderator is to be used for hunting purposes, the sound moderator is covered by the rifle certificate.

Must I apply for a certificate if I subsequently purchase a sound moderator? No. You only need to apply for a certificate for a sound moderator if the sound moderator is to be used with other weapons than your hunting rifle.

This also means that if you have been notified that you must apply for a new certificate for the sound moderator for your hunting rifle, you can ignore the notification.
